How to play Football bingo(soccer bingo)?

Besides for bingo there is one other game that I literally can’t get enough of – football. My pals never have to ask me twice to attend a game – especially when my all-time favorites Liverpool FC are playing. I’ve been a big Reds fans since I was knee-high and I follow my team with a passion second-to-none. But bingo is my numero uno game and I’ve found a way to merge my loves into one compact powder keg of excitement!football game

This is the year of the world’s most anticipated sporting event – the FIFA World Cup 2010. The event is scheduled to take place in the magnificent country of South Africa. This is a land with a history of hardship and triumph; it is a country as colorful as the mix of its people. That FIFA unanimously elected this African powerhouse to represent the hopes and dreams of football fans the world over is a testament to the enduring commitment of football’s supporters to spread the game far and wide.

When I was asked about the possibility of doing an article on football and bingo, it was for me a double feature presentation. I love both games and the idea of combining them was a walk in the park. Without further ado, let’s get to it – soccer bingo, or football bingo – it’s the same great game. Players will be curious to know how it works, so I’ve devised a simple explanation which follows shortly.

The rules, setup, layout and design of soccer bingo

Take a standard 5 x 5 bingo card. Instead of numbers place your favorite football terms, names, ideas and concepts. Some examples include: strikers, fullbacks, penalty kick, goalkeeper, yellow card, red card, umpire, referee, linesman, challenge, corner kick, forwards, off-sides, wall, mid-fielders, pitch, sweeper, trap, stopper and goal box. As you can well imagine, there are plenty such words to use and many of them can be used to fill up 75 standard ‘numbers.’

The first thing you’ll want to do is to print or prepare your cards. You can easily find soccer bingo cards on the web or even design a couple on Word, OpenOffice or other programs. After you’ve designed different cards – there’s no point giving everyone the same soccer bingo card! – then you can have a ‘neutral party’ call out the words randomly from a hamper, basket or bingo basket. Note that there should be no bias here so perhaps fold the words up and toss them all into a basket for the soccer bingo caller.

Players will then use bingo daubers to mark off the called words. And naturally the first player to correctly clear out a line – an X – an A or four corners etcetera will win the prize. This is the objective. I always spruce up my games with background music, finger foods and a side game of poker going on. But hey, that’s Jeremy Stersky’s style – you can tailor it any which way you like. And the games shouldn’t take more than 20 minutes or so – you don’t want your 6 – 15 players getting bored.

I’ve been gaming for years at bingo halls and I’ve never seen football bingo before. I guess Sven was right about the champions of the FIFA World Cup 2010. I was checking out for stats on the World Cup and I came across this site – unrelated – but really interesting. Sven you hit the nail on the head with Spain – I guess you are like that Octopus that correctly predicted the winners before games!
