Bingo and the environment

environment bingoThe recent catastrophe with the BP oil rig explosion, that left 11 workers dead and resulted in millions of barrels of thick oily sludge washing up all along the East Coast of the United States, is indeed a disaster of unprecedented proportions. While I do my level-best at bingo-room.com to refrain from casting aspersions, I believe it is our duty as responsible citizens to make our voices heard. Therefore I’ve dedicated this post to the wildlife, the fishermen and the communities that have suffered as a result of this awful disaster. The subject of today’s post is less about BP than it is about bingo and YOUR immediate environment – enjoy!

My dad’s a real estate agent and I’ve often accompanied him to show houses over the weekend. At least I used to do that when I was a younger man. Now however I’ve been relegated to writing bingo room posts – which I much rather prefer :) Nonetheless it got me thinking. How can I contribute something meaningful – within  the context of bingo and the environment that would resonate with players? If the oil spill in the Gulf is a little too far from home for most of us to relate to, then perhaps our own homes and their safety are a far better prospect. In this vein I feverishly set about compiling a helpful bingo-safety scorecard type game.

Home inspection bingo is here

Prior to purchasing a home,  renting a vacation home or selecting business premises it’s wise to draw up what I call a bingo-safety inspection card. Let’s assume that there are all manner of potential hazards that you might face as a new tenant or homeowner. To keep your realtor on his/her toes it’s wise to make up a list of potential safety and environmental hazards you may be subjected to when you sign on the dotted line.

The following issues should be carefully scrutinized:

  • Electrical appliances near water, or with unprotected plug covers (exposed wires)
  • Fire hazards – Curtains and blinds over lampshades, pampas grass etcetera
  • Vermin, pests, critters in/around the property
  • Nitrates in well water from poor drainage
  • E. Coli and dangerous bacteria present
  • Doors opening directly onto stairways
  • Down spout on the gutter is missing
  • General house/apartment sanitation
  • Burn barrels – Dioxin producers
  • Pesticide exposure and toxins
  • Windows held open by sticks
  • Industrial pollutants nearby
  • Pools of standing water
  • Rubbish in the garden
  • Asbestos in insulation
  • Unsteady railings
  • Lead in sandbox
  • Slippery floors
  • Rising damp
  • Nafthalene
  • Mold

Now the real fun begins. You are essentially your own bingo caller and you are the bingo player. Each of the above should be separated into categories like: indoor hazards, outdoor hazards, pests, immediate environment, bathroom, attic, lounge and so forth. Make up around  6 categories with 6 elements in each category. As you walk around the property and its perimeter, mark off hazards that you notice. Once you have marked off a diagonal, a vertical or a horizontal line, the property is not worth considering. It’s like 6 strikes and you’re out of there!

That is very relevant and very interesting food for thought but no saturated fats on this one :)

That’s really interesting. I’m so disheartened by this environmental catastrophe. It’s shocking. I agree that we should be vigilant with toxic chemicals and stuff.

Jeremy thanks for this posting. It’s really interesting. Sad about this shocking catastrophe. I hope more controls take place in the future with drilling permits off on the Gulf Coast.

This is a sad state of affairs. More oil than at my job at burger king.

  6. I fully agree with your thoughts here. BP has indeed paid a heavy price for whatever shoddy work they have done. But on a positive note, there is increased awareness now too. Thank you for your comments and please keep them coming in.
